Some time after Justin moved to New York to pursue his art, Brian's cancer came out of remission. Dying despite the best of medical measures, with nothing left but to wait out the last few miserable months, he did the most reasonable thing he could think of. He killed himself.
Highly confused, he woke up in The Mist.
